Introduction to part 3 and start of finding theme

Today was our introductory lesson for Part 3. This was extremely nerve racking as for this part of the foundation course we will be all by ourselves guiding and directing our own projects. We had a lecture that outlines the entire project which would be 11 weeks long. We were told that this project is one that will prepare us for BA courses as they require you to work independently.

We have to choose themes to base our projects on.

My personal aims for this project are to create challenge myself and be ambitious with my ideas but yet be practical. I want to ensure that I manage my time well and complete the set out tasks and trust the process. I am eager to make something that I will be proud of.

The tasks got us thinking about global issues that are currently relevant. In the studio day today we were all given some topics on which we were to make mind maps in groups. We got the title concerns and we had to write about what worries us and what we would like to change which brought up many issues society is currently facing like eradicating stereotypes and gender biases and making society as a whole a more inclusive and accepting space. We also spoke about global issues like climate change and lack of resources and environmental issues along with economic crisis being faced by several countries around the globe due to the current pandemic.

These issues opened my eyes to thinking of themes on which I could base my project for part3
I am greatly inspired by my surroundings but at the same time I have the constant urge to create spaces that are unexpected and extraordinary. I explored this idea in my contextual review and still believe it a great theme to work with. We spent the day in the studio making mind Maps- a Venn diagram of our discipline, interests and critical aims. This helped me narrow down my thinking and find my theme.

I spent the time coming up with any theme I could and making a note fo it in my sketchbook. I though of ‘otherworldly’ and ‘survival’ and ‘juxtaposition’ and many more.

I started off with some primary research in the studio and began making some sketch models just too explore some sensory aspects of my research. I was inspired by futuristic designs done by architects who were known to create beyond their time and I wanted to focus on designs that felt ‘other worldly’

I Used rope, wire and paper straws and wooden sticks to create a few sketch models. My vision was to crate geometric traces of the pathway of a moon orbiting around the planet or the rings around Saturn.
