1. Byzantine Architecture- Hagia Sophia Istanbul

To build his cathedral, Justinian turned to two men named Anthemius and Isidore the Elder. They built the Hagia Sophia in great haste, finishing it in less than six years. To put this in comparison it took nearly a century for medieval builders to construct the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris. This short construction period appears to have led to problems. Ancient sources, such as the writer Procopios, write that the builders had problems with the dome roof, the structure almost collapsing during construction. The dome used a system of piers to channel its weight.

Minimalistic Forest in Huzhou by Wutopia lab

A three-petal motif is repeated as canopies, skylights and screen perforations across this ethereal landscape by Wutopia Lab, located outside a sales office in Huzhou, China. The temporary White Upland project spans 3,296 square metres of land beside a sales centre for the Shanghai Huijian Investment Co in Zhejiang province, west of Wutopia Lab's home city Shanghai.

2. Neri&Hu's Suzhou Chapel- Combination of textured brick base with Ethereal White cubes

perforated metal surfaces form a white "veil" around the main hall of this chapel designed by Neri&Hu for a Hotel complex near the Chinese city of Suzhou.Lyndon Neri and Rosanna Hu's Shanghai studio designed Suzhou Chapel for a site within the Sangha resort, which is described as "a life learning and wellness community on the shores of the beautiful Yangcheng Lake".Located around 15 kilometres from Suzhou and 70 kilometres from Shanghai, the resort comprises a hotel with spa, 87 serviced apartments, 109 serviced villas, a clinic, education complex, retail facilities, amphitheatre and conference space.The chapel occupies a prominent plot by the waterfront that is visible from the main road. Its combination of brick walls and a floating white volume references other buildings found on the site, as well as the local vernacular of white rendered walls and black roofs.The dark-grey brick walls surrounding the chapel are of varying heights and intersect with one another to create a non-linear route leading through the landscape and into the building.

1. Janet Echelman - This ethereal colourful design displaying fluid forms helped me draw great inspiration. one of the themes I am exploring for my Part 3 project is 'Ethereal Architecture'

This design is a great reference displaying fluid ethereal or otherworldly forms and invoking similar emotions in the audience. the design makes great use of colour using pinks and oranges which are warm right tones adding a sense of liveliness and vibrancy which plays a huge role in the effect that the design creates on its audience.

2. Saket Sethi creates egg-shaped garden temple alongside rural Indian house

Indian architect Saket Sethi has completed the Sunoo Temple House on the outskirts of Mumbai with a rooftop garden and a private worship space that is designed to evoke a galaxy.

The dwelling was designed for a woman who wanted to create a home and place to worship surrounded by greenery as a surprise for her husband.

Sethi distinguished the home with an angled roof garden that has views over acres of surrounding paddy fields and created a garden temple that is shaped like an egg and decorated with a glittering mosaic.

Art and Design Context

1. WhiteOut by SpaceOperaForm

Designer Alex Suarez of Amsterdam and Los Angeles studio Space Opera Form has created an installation at a former salt factory in Hallein, Austria, comprising translucent panels that react to the static charge of visitors. Called WhiteOut, the installation consists of parallel panels made of thermally-bonded polypropylene filaments, suspended from the ceiling.

The screens move apart in response to the static charge of visitors walking between them, returning to their positions once people have passed.

2. Eduardo Tresoldi

Edoardo Tresoldi is an artist, that plays with the transparency of mesh and with industrial materials, making his creations part architecture, part artwork and full on ethereal constructions.Eduardo's designs of pavilions and outdoor spaces are inspiring to me as they express and invoke the sense of peace and divinity that i wish to achieve with my end design for the part 3 project. His work has thoroughly inspired me. he often uses light weight materials such as thin wire meshes which invoke that sense of other- worldly architecture. Born in 1987, he grew up in Milan where, at the age of 9, experimented different languages and techniques under the guidance of painter Mario Straforini. His work is made of the seen and the unseen. A out of this world duality exists in his work, a dream-like environment that demands to be mentally re-constructed. In January 2017 he has been included by Forbes among the 30 most influential European artists under 30.

3. Eduardo Tresoldi- Ethereal wire mesh sculpture at Arts Sella

Eduardo Tresoldii has partially filled the walls of Simbiosi – a ghostly wire-mesh sculpture on a hillside at the Arte Sella open-air museum in Italy– with Rocks. Located in Trentino Valley, the museum and sculpture park was hit with an unprecedented storm in October 2018, resulting in the destruction of various artworks and an upturned landscape. Simbiosi is a five-metre-tall sculpted form recalling classical architecture that sits upon a hilltop created as a result of the storm.

4. Warith Zaki and Amir Amzar- Proposal of Colony on Mars made from locally grown Bamboo

Warith Zaki and Amir Amzar have envisioned using bamboo grown and harvested on Mars to build the first colony on the red planet. Named Seed of Life, the conceptual colony design comprises a series of structures woven from bamboo by autonomous robots. Malaysian designers Zaki and Amzar designed the proposal to demonstrate that there may be alternative ways of building on Mars that do not rely on shipping material from earth or 3D printing.

1. Brooklyn architecture and design firm StudioKCA

Tens of thousands of recycled plastic bottles combined to create this cloud-shaped pavilion by Brooklyn architecture and design firm StudioKCA, which has been named one of the winners of the American institutes of architecture Small Projects Awards. Recognising projects built for a budget of less than $1.5 million with a floor area under 1,500 square metres, the annual AIA small projects awards went to 10 projects this year, including the Fall house by Fougeron Architecture, a cafe for Yale University by Bentel & Bentel and an installation at the Muse. One of two pavilions that picked up honours from the AIA, the Head in the Clouds project was designed by Studio KCA for a summer exhibition hosted last year by participatory and interactive arts organisation Figment on New York’s Governors Island.
